Elisheva: My first child acted the same way as the baby you describe.
When she was young and my milk had just come in, probably in the first few
weeks to month, she would suckle at the breast and then all of a sudden her
eyes would go wide, she would start swallowing faster and faster and then
soon she would be swallowing so fast she couldn't breathe until finally she
would pull off crying and sputtering on the mouthful of milk all the while
being sprayed in the face with the milk from my nipple. Soon she would
settle down from the "near drowning" and then begin looking for the breast.
And usually be able to nurse nicely on the partially emptied breast. No
long term problems for her, as she got older either my supply let down a
little more slowly or she got big enough to handle the downpour of milk.
