Heather,

I'm so sorry about the loss of funding - it's a reality in our jobs that we
will need to be ever-alert and collaborate with granted agencies if we want
to serve the poor.

You didn't mention what state you live in. Here in California there are
CPSPs (Comprehensive Perinatal Service Programs). The provide services
beyond just health care, that include Social Work, Health Education and
Nutrition. The state MediCal Program reimburses these agencies for time
spend with mothers for these additional services throughout pregnancy and
the first 6 - 8 weeks postpartum. The reimbursement isn't great, but if
there is a good number of moms, it works.

The agency can bill for services provided by a Dietitian, Nurse, Health
Educator (need a Masters in Health Education) or a Health Worker. Almost
any of us fit the "Health Worker" requirements. The biggest problem is that
these services must be preformed in the office - not at the patient's home -
if you are not a licensed health worker.

Some of our local hospitals have CPSP programs connected with them, and have
hired people to provide breastfeeding education prior to delivery and
breastfeeding help after discharge.
