Today I had a call from a mother 35 weeks pregnant who has been having a bloody discharge from one of her nipples for the past six months. She has no lumps and no pain. She says she has had US's of the breast throughout the pregnancy, and the discharged was tested by cytology without any significant findings. . She is aware that this may be symptoms of a malignancy, but she says the doctors told her that it would be further investigate after she gives birth. She called to ask if she would be able to breastfeed.
I stressed the fact that this should not wait and be further investigated ASAP, and I wasn't sure about the breastfeeding, that I'd ask some more knowledgeable sources and get back to her. I didn't want to worry or alarm her, but I was surprised, remembering such discussions on Lactnet, that it wasn't further investigated, since it has been there for six months.

I'd like to hear what others have to say about this.
