I remember when we used to make these in LLL some xxxx years ago.
You can buy soft, stretchy t-shirt knit fabric in most fabric stores. It's
already in a loop as it comes off the bolt. For a 4" wide sling, you need
8.5" length of fabric off the bolt. This is twice the width, plus seam
allowance. You need a serger or other sewing machine that makes stretchy
seams.
How to make: cut your 8.5" loop once across the width to make one long 8.5"
strip. Fold in half lengthwise. Sew or serge across one end and down the
entire length, right on the edge. No need to trim seams. Turn right side
out & stitch the open end closed. That's it!
If you make slings of varying widths, you might close this end with a
different colored ribbon (gros-grain, twill, satin) for each size so you
can pick out what you want out of the pile immediately. I'm not into
folding the things. :-/
How to use: mom can drape the sling under her breast & tie the ends behind
her neck, adjusting for comfort. The width should support about 3/4 of her
breast from rib cage toward the areola. It should support without raising
the breast to an unnatural level. With large breasts, she may never ber
able to nurse in the "Madonna" or cradle hold. With the sling to hold the
weight of the breast, mom needs only to assist baby's latch with her hands.
Time to swap breasts? Just remove the loop from one breast & position it
under the other breast. No need to re-tie the loop once mom finds the best
length for herself.
