Well done, Winnie! You mention the very important items in this whole
discussion.
Thumbs up for your proactive and necessary contribution!
I am busy myself, trying to draw attention to the issue in the Netherlands,
as I published the Dutch translation of 'Sleeping With Your Baby' a few
months ago.
Just today, I finished the last few details for an article after being
interviewed by a lady who will publish about cosleeping.
Like you, I have put emphasis on the importance of clear definitions.
You can't speak about any phenomenon if you don't describe what you mean.
You can't speak about 'safe' without a definition or about 'exclusive
breastfeeding' or about whatever.
Lack of clarity about what is meant is a sure and certain road to confusion
and misunderstanding and prejudice.
I also pointed out that we can only count the babies that die... not those
who live because someone was near!
You cannot count them, because they live on, so there cannot be numbers on
saved babies thanks to cosleeping or bedding-in.
We are hoping we will be able to schedule presentations by Jim McKenna next
year.
One of these days, I will try and find more interested people to contract
him; his message is so relevant!
Our babies need us close; closeness and non-separation (as Michel Odent said
recently in Germany) safeguard 'the human capacity to love'.
(In your mind, you'll have to add the friendly, heavy French accent to this
message yourself! ;o))

Best wishes,

Marianne Vanderveen IBCLC, Netherlands

Subject: Re: campaign ad anti-bedsharing

Here is my response to the latest anti-cobedding ads here in Milwaukee:

"First, let's get the terminology right. COSLEEPING is actually recommended
by
AAP and others. Cosleeping is having the baby close to the parents-mother
in
particular. This means in the same room or in a sleeping arrangement next to
the
parent's bed. It is COBEDDING that is controversial. Cobedding (or
bedsharing)
is sharing the same sleep surface.
