I'm glad Sarah Reece-Stremtan M.D. weighed in, as she is definitely the
expert in the area! I'm so glad she's a part of this community!

Sarah mentioned feeling lousy after anesthesia, so I thought I would share
my experience. I had a large kidney stone which declared its presence at 3
months postpartum. I was told by the emergency doc to pump and dump while
on pain meds, but thankfully I realized that was a crock and consulted my ob
and a friend who had Hale's M &MM. I was again told to pump and dump for 24
hours by the anesthesiologist, but I had done my research ahead of time and
had heard that as soon as I felt up to it, I could nurse. I actually pumped
in pre op (to be "empty" going into surgery). After surgery, I felt pretty
awful. I was home by mid afternoon, but I didn't even feel up to being with
the baby until around 11pm. Remember, she was only 3 months old, so for me
to not want to even hold her, I was feeling pretty bad. I did pump (and
save) a couple times during the separation. I was back at work at that time
so I had plenty of EBM for her to eat while I was out of commission. Around
11 as I recall, I started nursing her again and we were back to normal. She
did nurse a lot that night ;) So while there was pumping post-op, it was my
choice based on how I felt, and NO dumping :)

Feel free to share my experience with the mom if it would help.
