Variations of nipple creams have been used for centuries. Good research on their effectiveness is hard to find. However to look up the safety profile of various creams you can check The Environmental Working Group’s cosmetic safety database, Skin Deep. It lists 31 commercial nipple creams for breastfeeding mothers. This data base rates each preparation as 0-2 low hazard, 3-6 moderate hazard, and 7-10 high hazard based on an analysis of each ingredient for carcinogenic potential, developmental/reproductive toxicity, violations, restrictions, and warnings, neurotoxicity, endocrine disruptions, allergies/immunotoxicity, organ toxicity, and multiple/additive exposure sources.
