If you look in the archives from about two years ago you will see a huge amount of information sent to me regarding MY battle regarding Depo. Jack Newman was particularly helpful.
Good luck.

LCs,

What are your thoughts and/or practices regarding Depo Provera being given before 6 weeks postpartum?  The warning printed on the vial label and in the Mosby nursing drug handbook says not to be given to breastfeeding mothers till 6 weeks postpartum.  The Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine says it would be "prudent" to wait 6 weeks before taking any contraceptive.

My coworker ran a breastfeeding support program for 8 years.  They did follow up phone calls and found that women who where given depo provera before discharge had no milk supply by two weeks and nothing brought it back.  I wish she had published statistics on this.

I'm working with physicians who want it given before discharge from the hospital.  Thanks in advance for your feedback.
