Hi All,

I had a consultation this morning - my clients asked me if I'd like to have
their copy of CHILD magazine - they told me I had to read the article about
LC's... For those of you who have yet to read this article - you must read
it... IMHO it is horrid! Not only is the slant towards the LC not a
positive one, but there is some misleading information about BF as well.
(Anyone know which oral antibiotic is used for thrush??? That's a new one
for me...)

Maybe the author was going for some tongue in cheek type of humor, but to me
it was really rather offensive. The author said she shouldn't have been
surprised by the "eagerness-bordering-on-desperation" she encountered when
she went on rounds with the LC she interviewed - as if the LC was some sort
of deviant who gets some type of illicit thrill out of working with BF
women. She says that the LC's words to a mom, "I think you're going to be
fine," are a "Mantra". Somehow that doesn't sound like a positive
description to me. The author describes a BF support group interaction and
says, the LC "...is there to provide reassurance, but with the subtle
pressure she often exerts I suspect she can sometimes cause as much anxiety
as she alleviates." The descriptive words the author uses to describe the
LC's comments lead the reader to believe that the LC is a real - well, not
nice person. I happen to believe (from a note to Lactnet just before the
article came out) that this is in fact not a true description of the LC
interviewed.

At the end of the article the author writes that the LC "...greets each day
with a sense of wonder, seeing herself as a star player in the soap opera of
new motherhood." I wonder if that is the author's impression or the LC's?
It appears to be the LC's...but...I wonder.

BTW - my clients were NOT impressed with the article. They told me that I
was nothing like what this author depicted LC's to be. Hmmm....

Jaye
