OOPS! I didn't finish my last post
In chiming in to the LC qualification discussion, I would like to agree
with Coach Smith that LC work requires BOTH people skills and "book"
skills. What about LLLLs who give well intentioned, but underinformed
support in potentially dangerous situations? Not all LLLLs have the same
experiences and training. You don't know what you don't know. We are not
usually skilled at working with Moms and babies in the NICU for instance.
I like the fact that local LLLLs can confidently refer difficult
situations on to LCs that we know have more expertise and training. It
would be nice to be that confident with all LCs in other communities. If
the standards aren't uniform AND tough, then we don't know if we are
making a good referral or not.

LCs also make referrals to LLLLs for ongoing social and mothering
support. That is where LLL and other lay supporters have their strength.
We provide different, but equally important services.

Quality assurance and higher standards for LCs can only help the
profession (and breastfeeding help in general) gain acceptance and
recognition for unique and valuable skills. Raising standards is not
meant to keep qualified people out, but rather to attempt to assure
consumers that Moms and babies will get more reliable care.
