Nikki and I have been thinking about her “lament” post from a couple of days ago - the medicalization of breastfeeding support and the separation of milk from breastfeeding, breasts from the bodies of mothers and babies. This is, of course, a complicated social issue that we have discussed before.

Many of the people on this list and involved with breastfeeding support are IBCLCs, and many have other training and credentials as well: RN, MD, LLLL, RD come to mind. Over the years, we have seen, read and responded to many posts lamenting and praising the fact that the IBCLC profession and credential has become more medicalized, both reflecting and contributing to the problem we’re discussing. This is not a comment about individual IBCLCs who vary widely in work settings, approaches, and professional and personal backgrounds. Rather it is about the training and qualifications to join the profession. Creating cultures of breastfeeding requires sustained effort of many people and many different professions. What is the role of the IBCLC profession in the larger picture of breastfeeding support, of creating a breastfeeding culture? What is the role of peer counselors, mother to mother counselors? Who else are the key stakeholders and what are their roles? How can we best use the knowledge and skill sets of each in promoting and supporting breastfeeding? How are these questions addressed in different parts of the world and what can we learn from one another?

Thanks, Naomi and Nikki
