The clinical nurse specialist that works in our NICU has asked me to look
into the issue of freezing expressed milk to prevent CMV in premies. I
have looked in the archives and checked with other NICUs. Her specific
questions are - are there hospitals that do not routinly screen mothers for
CMV freezing expressed milk for premies? And if so, does that take away
from the benefits of using fresh milk which helps maintain the immumologic
factors to prevent NEC, and etc.? If freezing- for what gestational age
and how long?

Thank you for your input - Suzette Todd,RN, IBCLC
