a mom being told (fill in the blank) recently.  There  are many lactation

Just to let you all know, my comments are very similar to Mary Jane's.  I
have to admit sometimes that it is very hard to not laugh out loud at some
of the stuff I hear.  Also difficult is to hide my anger and frustration
with some of the information being 'taught'.  When mom says that nurse so
and so told her X, I tend to give it the benefit of exhausted-mom-brain and
possible miscommunication - knowing that if I have heard that comment from
more than one mom re: the same hospital, that there also may be some real
truth behind it.  However, when mom AND her partner tell me they were told
the same thing individually - well, then I tend to give a lot more credence
to the information.

I agree that it is critical to not 'dis' the nurses, and I do tell parents
to 'write a letter' or fill out the evaluation sheet (if they get one here).
However, most of them are too tired and busy with the new baby and routine
of sleep deprivation that writing a letter is the last thing on their minds.


The most common complaint from my clients is "Why are there so many
different opinions from so many different staff members?"  This absolutely
infuriates and frustrates them (and me).  I will be overjoyed when hosp
admin gets it together and gets all the staff trained properly with evidence
based, up to date breastfeeding information and NOT info based on personal
opinions.  Recently, one of my moms was shown how to hold her baby away from
her body in the cross-cradle hold and lean over the baby to breastfeed.
Why?  Because the nurse told her and her partner (and mom's mom) that this
was what worked for her when she had her c-sec.  ????   Now mom has sore
engorged breasts, badly damaged nips and is pumping for a couple days to
relieve the engorgement and damage due to completely improper
position/latch.  Ugh.
