Ahh, but I this is exactly my point. I do think the hormones *would* be the
same, regardless of whether a mom was letting down to a pump or a baby. The
sounds, sight, action of the pump would cause the mom to let down, just like
a baby would.

One of the most enlightening and interesting Lactnet posts that I read while
a new mom, which caused a lightbulb moment for me, was about CCK and "brain
dead nursers" by Chris Mulford:
http://peach.ease.lsoft.com/scripts/wa.exe?A2=ind0102B&L=LACTNET&P=R9236&I=-3

It explains what happens during and after a feeding at the breast.

My arguement is that the baby is now *outside* of this hormonal loop - they
will be on their own schedule of feeding/sleep that is different than the
mom's. This doesn't seem conducive to the mental or physical well-being of
the mom, if she is constantly needing to use her willpower to overcome the
urges that her hormones are guiding her to fullfill (sleep after pumping).

I'm not an LC, so I can't say that pumping is never needed. But I'm just
saying that CCK and its affects on mom and baby, which I'm sure the majority
of moms are NOT aware of, needs to be explained to moms who are pumping.
They are not *lazy* or *weak-willed* if they feel sleepy after nursing, they
are doing what they are supposed to do. And her family needs to know this,
too, so she would be allowed to honor those impulses to rest, rather than
get up and clean, or whatever.

Moms absolutely need to know that the breasts are not just some storage
container for milk, and a pump simply gets the milk out. Perhaps this (CCK)
would be another bit of information that may encourage moms *choosing* to
pump, to realize that breastfeeding is so much more than about the milk.
And in the case of a mom who*needs* to build supply, maybe she COULD fit in
those extra nursings, if she and baby were on the same eat/sleep/awake
schedule.

Just like Chris Mulford said in her post, I love to pass this information
along to new moms on message forums. And I urge you all to review it at the
link above.
