I went to a workshop where the neonatal nurse practioner speaking mentioned a study that there was a correlation between soy-based formula and early puberty in girls. On a personal note, I have twin daughters who were breast-fed for 6 mos with maybe a daily bottle of formula (not soy). One daugher starting "developing" in second grade/age 8 and started her period first day of 5th grade/age 10 and the other is just now starting puberty at age 12. I had a hard time understanding why my daughter was devloping so early and then gained a LOT of weight the summer her period started. My mom-brain knew something was not right. A pediatric nursing professor friend of mine encouraged me to seek a second opinion and we switched pediatricians. Long and short - this daughter has Polycystic Ovary Syndrome and hyperinsulinemia and now sees a pediatric endocrinologist. At their middle school, I see many, many heavy well-devloped girls and I wonder what is going on with them.

Subject: Re: breastfeeding and timing of onset of puberty

Do you think the early onset of puberty has any thing to do with overweight?
There is a connection between formula feeding and obesity. Most of the
little girls I see with earlier onset of puberty are too heavy. The flip
side of this is that if you are breastfed and grow normally, gain weight
normally, then you hit puberty at a "normal" time. Feeling cynical today,
