Dairy and soy are common allergens, however there are several others: a recent Medscape article I read listed milk, soy, wheat, egg, and peanut (Feeding the Infant with Possible Food Allergy: What's Best? by Jennifer Kim, MD 6-8-2014). We also know that corn and tree nuts can be allergenic. We also know that some babies who react to milk will react to anything bovine, so beef or veal.
I often ask mother what she eats a lot of. She may be eating nuts or peanut butter, for example, to make up for other protein foods she is avoiding.
There should be quite a bit in the archives that address the detective work that is often required to find the offending food(s), and on elimination diets for the mother. All around, a difficult situation. I would not counsel the mother to wean.
