Ann,

How about having her use wool breast pads? A bit expensive but well worth it
for moms who experience this type of pain. As has been mentioned before, a
rice filled sock heated prior to breastfeed in microwave and at the ready when
baby comes off may help, too. Perhaps when latch was less than correct for
her, nerve damage occurred and may take time to heal. Homeopathic hypernicum is
a remedy for nerve pain that she could take; B-6 vitamin according to Jack
Newman's handout for Reynauds might also help. She needs something concrete to
hold onto and reassurance that more than likely pain will subside soon. I
find moms can tolerate discomfort when they realize it won't last throughout
lactation and will then be less likely to wean knowing someone is trying to help.
