THE ADVERTISING COUNCIL ACCEPTS THREE NEW CAMPAIGNS
PSAs to Educate Americans about Breastfeeding, to Promote Interracial
Cooperation and to Improve Literacy
NEW YORK, June 19, 2002 - The Advertising Council announced today the
addition of three new public service advertising (PSA) campaigns to its
docket. The first campaign will communicate the benefits of breastfeeding to
first-time parents and other adults. Another effort, sponsored by the
National Underground Railroad Freedom Center, will be designed to inspire
modern-day abolitionists. A third new PSA campaign will promote literacy.

"By educating the public and providing them with the resources they need,
these three new campaigns seek to improve literacy, promote racial harmony,
and educate the public about breastfeeding," according to Peggy Conlon,
President and CEO of The Advertising Council. "Whether they are deciding if
they are going to breastfeed, witnessing an act of discrimination, or
watching their children struggle to read and write, Americans will have the
knowledge and resources they need to make the most informed decisions. I am
confident that advertising can and will help raise awareness and stimulate
change on behalf of these important issues."

Breastfeeding rates in America today are considerably low, despite the many
benefits it provides for babies and mothers. According to the Office on
Women's Health (OWH) in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services,
breast milk is the best nutrition for infants and it contains more than 200
infection-fighting factors. The new PSA campaign, sponsored by the OWH, will
be developed pro bono by ad agency McKinney & Silver in order to increase the
rates of breastfeeding in the United States.

Dr. Suzanne G. Haynes, Senior Science Advisor in the Office, says "I can't
think of any campaign that will improve the health of children more than the
National Breastfeeding Awareness Campaign - and the benefits to mothers are
just as great."
