Subject: vitamin D again

The need for vitamin D has more to do with this vitamin being genetically
engineered than an "epidemic" of vitamin D deficiency. They have a
product they need to market. This is done through buying the research and
then getting good press coverage. Gene technology will have us believing
that we cannot walk, talk, and think without ingesting some gene-spliced
food, or food supplement.

Hello! I wanted to respond to the above Lactnet post concerning vitamin D
supplements.

I discussed the issue of whether there is a genetically engineered vitamin
D supplement on the market with Michael Holick, PhD, MD of Boston
University. He is one of the world's experts on vitamin D. For the last
25 years, he has been on the cutting edge in this field.

To our knowledge, THERE IS NO GENETICALLY ENGINEERED VITAMIN D SUPPLEMENT
FOR HUMANS. If anyone 'out there' has some additional information, please
let us all know. Please include a company or manufacturer.

A few years back, a genetically engineered vitamin D supplement was being
given to CHICKENS. They found that it caused them to have increased
muscle mass. To our knowledge, it is no longer being used in chickens.

The issue of the importance of vitamin D supplementation is grounded on
the following facts and evidence:

vitamin D is essential to the normal functioning of our bodies

vitamin D deficiency is found throughout the world in all age groups

there is evidence to suggest that long-term subclinical vitamin D
deficiency is associated with an increased risk of certain cancers and
autoimmune disorders

vitamin D supplementation has been studied for years and has been shown to
be safe and effective (decreased incidence of vitamin D deficiency and
decreased incidence of vitamin D deficient rickets)
