Nikki and Kira- thank you for your thoughts. I posted the original topic
and I can tell you that in my hospital the mothers are coming from China,
from communities (mostly) where breastfeeding is not common and attempting
1 or 2 times but giving mostly formula is considered "breastfeeding." It's
hard to establish and educate that more milk will come as the biggest
concern is, "I'm trying but I have no milk." These mom's are then surprised
on day 3 when they are painfully engorged and I bite my tongue when I have
to repeat what I have e been telling them from the beginning. These
families are in a "modified" lying in period. They leave as a family unit
very shortly after delivery to all return to China. There is no follow up
and if there is family that isn't supportive of breastfeeding, as there
often is an elder family member raised in a generation full of formula,
then there is no continued support for the mother to keep on when things
get tough. This is just the tip of the iceberg of what I am encounter at
work, among other barriers.
