If babies do search the breast with open eyes, once they are happily feeding (nursing?) they usually close their eyes and contentedly drink.
Notice all the babies on Dr. Smillie's video: they find the breast by feel with their cheeks, chin, and tongue, and perhaps by smell. They did not look for the breast with open eyes. Some were first-time feeders; some were experienced BFing babies who were doing their dance for the video. No open eyes that I could see.

The ones who go to breast with eyes open are those who are in a quiet-alert state already and are placed in proper vicinity by mother. They do latch with eyes open, tend to stay that way for a little while, but when the first milk release begins, and the gulping begins, they close their eyes and continue that way to the end of the feed.

Just my observations.
