Help! We have recently come across a few mothers who are expressing milk for very small premies and are growing bacteria in their breastmilk. In each of the 3 cases, the babies were not tolerating breastmilk, abdomins becoming swollen with gas after feedings. After ruling out all else, they cultured the milk. One mom had heavy staff growing. Another had ecoli, a third had several different organisms. Does anyone have helpful information for us. What is acceptable? We are not dealing with people who want to hinder breastfeeding and the cultures were only done because the babies were sick. Any information would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Judi Hall
