Subject: Hospital LC staffing concerns

Our lactation program, which began in 1989 with 1 LC and a
Breastfeeding
Committee. It has now overgrown its bounds and we are looking to re-
organize
but are interested in finding a program with a comprehensive focus and
insightful philosophy that we could model our re-organization after.
Here are
some of our current questions:

1. How many deliveries do you have per year? 1800
2. How many LC's do you have on staff? How many FTE's? 2 FT
3. Do you see all patients each day? Problem- only patients? Primips
and/or discharges? All breastfeeders and breast/bottle feeders.Problems and
DC's get seen first ea. A.M.
4. Do you utilize a referral system for patient contacts? Who refers? We do.
5. Do you only see in-pts. or do you have an out-pt. component to your
program? Who sees these pts.? LC's see both. We also have an OB outpt
Home Visit 48 hrs after DC.(OB RN's do these and refer back to us w/
problems or follow-up.
6. Do you cover 7 days a week including holidays? Which shifts? Ea. LC does
4 - 9 hr (10-11 mostly) days, No Sundays or Holidays, altho I feel 7 days
is preferrable.
7. What is the patient load daily for each LC? Averages 10-12 per day, some
days less, some more. Also see ER, Ped's re-admits, Med-Surg pt's if
brfding.
8. Do you have a telephone hot-line for patient questions/ concerns?
Who fields these calls? Yes, we do.
9. Are you a Baby Friendly Hospital? Not yet,Have Letter of Intent. Buy
own formula, no gift bags, No pacifiers.....
Any information that you could share would be so helpful. Thank you
for any
insight that you can provide. Please share any other info you recieve as we
are reorganize as well. Always room for new ideas.:)
