Dear Friends:

Today, I went to my chiropractor with the magic hands. We were talking about
how modern life takes it toll on our bodies. I mentioned how Jeanne Parvati
Baker had written 20 years ago about the reason for more posterior babies
was connected to the time women spend sitting in bucket seats and
overstuffed furniture, and that led us onto the subject of reflux. From her
chiropractice perspective (which is congruent with Jean Leidloff's theory in
her great book "The Continuum Concept"), we are all more prone to reflux
because we spend so much time sitting around. Our organs aren't meant to be
squished for prolonged periods.

It's true for adults, and it is true for our babies who were meant to be
carried, not parked in bouncy seats/car seats/infant seats.

How many breastfed babies are in agony with reflux and on strong
medications? More and more in my experience. How many of these medications
interfere with calcium absorption, contributing to problems in the future?
(No one knows.........yet).

I wonder if we should be replicating the primate experience to initiate
breastfeeding with all mothers. I've started teaching healthcare workers and
students to have the mother nurse at least once standing up before she
leaves the hospital. That way she holds her baby very well, and triggers
more of those 17 newborn reflexes that Suzanne Colson describes (
www.biologicalnurturing.com) than she would if she was sitting down.

warmly,
Nikki Lee
