Hi Carrie
There are internationally accepted definitions of infant feeding behaviours.
They are described here:
Labbok, M. H., Krasovec, K. (1990) Toward consistency in breastfeeding
definitions. Studies in Family Planning, 21, 226-230.
The indicators you use will depend on what you want to know. It is important
to distinguish between exclusive breastfeeding from birth and baby receiving
only human milk at discharge if you want to know how effectively your
hospital has implemented the ten steps or whether the medical staff are
overusing formula or sugar water or whatever.
Cheers

Subject: meaning of exclusive breastfeeding?

Recently the discussion has come up at my hospital on the meaning of
"exclusive breastfeeding" for statistical purposes. On discharge, would you
say a baby is exclusively breastfed if the mom is still breastfeeding even
if the baby received formula for medical reasons such as low blood glucose,
jaundice, etc. or is "exclusively breastfeeding" reserved for a baby who has
ONLY received breastmilk? Thanks in advance for your input.
