Dear Friends
First -- before I say anything else -- I do NOT want to start a debate
regarding immunizations!
Second -- My daughter has made what she believes is an informed
decision not to immunizer her baby until he is a little older. She is
exclusively breastfeeding, is a stay at home mom, the baby won't be
going to day care and they have no other children coming in to the home.
She is not saying "no" immunizations ever.
Her pediatrician (IMHO is more than misinformed about breastfeeding)
appears to be pro formula. At her first visit she was given 2 huge
"gift" packs of formula (which she promptly returned), was told that
formula was OK once in a while, and a sales pitch on immunizing.
Today at baby's 3 month checkup, once again the pediatrician told her
a formula is OK and she can start a cereal anytime.
All of that she has been able to handle.
But today when the pediatrician went on his immunization sales pitch
again, my daughter told him that her baby was getting passive immunity
through her -- to which he responded -- getting immunity through
breastmilk is a MYTH.
He went on to say that there is an outbreak of whooping cough and 10
babies died (this is Orange County, California). IMHO, again, I think
he's playing on "mommy guilt" to accomplish his own agenda.

She understands the difference between passive and active immunity.
She used to help me with breastfeeding and childbirth classes so she
is more informed than the "average mom." She understands the
difference between passive and active immunity. But he made her doubt
herself today
I know the answers but she has asked for a little reassurance, from
someone other than her mom ----
     1) Do babies get passive immunity through breastmilk?
     2) Is it to everything mom has antibodies for (from having the
immunization or illness herself) or is it selective?

Can you give me something to pass on to her?

Thanks in advance
