It is my understanding from speaking with food technologists that
all soy products contain plant estrogens, although the amount is
partly dependent on the part of the bean used to make the product.
The issues for adults are very different to babies.

Cultures which have a high soy based diet (eg Japan) have a lower
incidence of breast cancer, osteoporosis, pre-menstual tension and
post menopausal symptoms. These is apparently a company now working
on producing concentrated estrogen soy biscuits/bars for women
entering menopause. I think the ideas is that morning tea could
replace hormone replacement pills or patches. I understand that
plant estrogens are useful in adults with low natural estogens, or
with women who have symptoms from their naturally fluctuating levels.
A diet which includes plant estrogens tends to level out fluctuations.

Tofu would have estrogen, but levels would vary depending on the part
of the bean used. It probably varies from brand to brand. I would
think a baby having tofu as one of a range of weaning foods is quite
a different matter to having soy formula as a total diet, unless the
baby is already on soy formula as well. Does anyone know at what age
the Japanese introduce tofu to trhe diet?

I have read that the estrogen in soy infant formula is equivilant to
the baby having a daily intake which would affect menstuation in an
adult female. Someone else claimed soy fed babies got the equivilant
of twelve contaceptive pills per day. I think the truth is that we
don't yet know enough about whether this matters. I personally have
serious reservations and would never suggest a soy formula,
estogens, aluminium, and all. I am not comfortable with the
potential long-term outcomes for these kids. Being not-breastfed is
a burden enough without going even further from nature.
