Helen, and all
Yes, any of us that have ever suggested syringe or cup feeding have probably had to respond to the "afraid of aspiration" issue. If anyone out there has yet to see research, or case study of aspiration caused by syringe or cup feeding, I'd like to see it. None of the naysayers(whether physician or other)whom I've heard offer this "concern" have ever shown me justifiable reason for this concern. So, if there is a good reason to believe a baby would benefit from alt. feeding method, and you are met with resistance, first question where the concern comes from. Often, simply fear of unknown, or untried. Last winter, in a pre-conference clinical our staff participated in, we offered an alt. feeding station; complete with live mother/babies willing to man.express milk and be cup fed for demo.purposes. This was very effective,as many had not seen before, babies handled beautifully, safely, and even participants who had never tried/seen and were skeptical said it made more sense after they themselves tried the method!(that is, cupfeeding themselves, using only the techniques also used on baby).Sometimes, is slow process to change, but if you can emphasize "precautions" in form of inservice, may help.(sitting up, no pouring, baby-paced,etc.)btw,ask if they've every filled a bottle, put on abm co.nipple, and turned upside down. Talk about concern for aspiration! Good Luck with this Dr!
