I've read this described as a nipple blister (BAB pp. 406-407) or milk
blister (R&A p. 493). I've experienced one personally, and know three other
mothers who've had them. Mine was extremely painful, worse than thrush or
a plugged milk duct impe. In my case, I lanced it with a sterile needle.
The relief was instantaneous, with backed up milk squirting out. LLLI
doesn't recommend the mother do this herself, btw:-) One of the three
mothers experienced this multiple times, and had to have hers opened by her
physician several times. She had crystallized milk plugs, not just a
blister over the ductal opening. Not fun! I'd love to know what makes some
women prone to this.
