Dear Lorrie

The problem with thickening the breastmilk is almost certainly the amylase
content of breastmilk. I asked Peter Hartmann, as he flashed by today, what
his thoughts were on possible alternatives. He suggested exploring the gums
that are used to thicken formula instead of using anything containing
starch.
He also said he had a mum ring him seeking an explanation for an occurrence
much the same as you describe. She had expressed her milk to mix with some
rice cereal, had heated it gently and then was called away for some time.
When she returned there was only clear solution present in the bowl.
Good luck in your search for an appropriate thickener.
