Hello Mary,
I had a case which sounds similar to what you descibe. The sore bump was
prominent and had been there for many weeks before I saw her.  I had mom use
warm, saline soaks (1c water + 1/4 tsp salt + 1/1 tsp baking soda) 10
minutes before feedings as often as she could, at least 4-5 tmes a day
followed by gently rubbing with a wash cloth. The ped was willing to
prescrbe Newman's All Purpose Nipple Ointment. It took several days for the
bump to come to a head. Mom eventually squeezed out a thick white secretion
which gradually became thinner over several treatments per day for a couple
of days. It seemed better so she stopped treating.  It  reoccurred shortly
after, she treated again and got more thick secretion, but less than the
first time. The second round of treatment completely resolved the problem. I
suspect it was a plug that was there for a long time, probably since a
birth.
