If you work in a hospital or medical office setting, see if they
have access to AT&T translation services.  I believe this is
available even if your local phone provider isn't AT&T.  There is a
charge which is why it may not be practical for those in private
practice.  You need 2 phones and the ability to set up a conference
call.  You call AT&T, tell them the language you need and when they
connect you, you talk into the phone as if you are talking directly
to the mom.  The interpreter then relays the info to mom over her
phone.  We have only had to use it a few times, because being in a
large metropolitan area, we can usually locate interpreters, but it
has been helpful when we run into a less common, for our area,
language.  We have so many Spanish-speaking moms that our hospital
has Spanish interpreters available 24/7.  (Makes me wish I had taken
Spanish instead of French many years ago in high school!  Who knew
then.)
