Hi

The comment regarding nipple piercing was made as below:

> There is no evidence that nipple piercing has any effect on breastfeeding.
> For more information, consult the following article:
>
> Nipple Piercing: Is It Compatible with Breastfeeding? LEAVEN, June-July
> 1999, pp. 64-65 http://www.llli.org/llleaderweb/LV/LVJunJul99p64.html

However, there is a report of 3 case studies

Association of Nipple Piercing With Abnormal Milk Production and
Breastfeeding
Catherine P. Garbin; Jane P. Deacon; Marnie K. Rowan; et al.  JAMA. 2009;
301(24):2550-2551

which observed
At 4 weeks, one mother exclusively BF but from the unaffected breast only,
the other two mothers needed 150-180ml comps/day despite domperidone and
expressing after feeds
Reduced mammary blood flow was measured in all 3 cases in the affected
breasts
Ductal septa (?adhesion) observed in 1 case
test weighs were done on presentation, amounts transferred were 0 and 54ml,
4 and 84mls, 4 and 76 mls for each of the mothers from the afffected and
unaffected breasts respectively

Although many mums with piercings may feed without problems, there may be
issues for other mothers that should be recognised.
