A mother that I am helping has a healthy 4 month old baby who is
breastfeeding and gaining weight appropriately. The mother has noticed
that her left breast has always produced significantly less milk than the
right breast. She has been starting each feed with the left breast and then
moving the baby to the right breast. Today she called me and said that the
baby is now refusing the left breast totally. I advised her to continue to
offer the left breast, especially when the baby is sleepy and may be more
accepting, and to begin to pump the left breast with a hospital grade
electric pump. I also recommended that she seek medical attention and to
suggest to the doctor a breast ultrasound or mammogram.
Mom tells me that breast involution occurred on the left at 8 months with
her first baby who is now a preschooler. She continued to breastfeed the
first baby till 1 year of age on the right breast.
Mom is worried that the milk supply has gone so soon (at 4 months not 8
months) with this current baby. She would like to breastfeed this baby
until 1 year of age.
There is no history of injury or surgery to the breast or chest wall.

Any ideas as to what may be happening? Any suggestions to help this Mom?
