Trish,
When our newest LC [who was then reading and studying everything she could
for The Exam] came to me with one of the pediatricians' booklet on bf (which
was full of lousy advice), she was just livid, asking me "can you believe
this???" To which I replied "Welcome to the world of lactation consulting."
Which meant, now see how I feel everyday! And now that you know much much
more about bf, see how you feel you must change the world!

Yes, it is very difficult and frustrating to hear such misinformation! And
so I say to you, "welcome to the world of bf advocacy and welcome to
lactnet, which will expand your mind and world like you wouldn't believe.

How would I have acted in your situation? I would probably say something
like "that used to be the advice given out, but much, much more has been
learned about bf in recent years, and that is no longer true. Increasing
fluid intake or milk intake does not affect milk production. And since br.
milk is specific for humans, it is not allergenic, but foreign proteins can
be, esp. cow's milk. And mom's in this situation often have to eliminate
even tiny hidden amts in various foods....yada, yada, yada." Now whether
anyone was listening at that point, I wouldn't want to bet on it. But still
the educating goes on and on. At least I see some changes taking place at my
job. Even very "resistant" staff are now hanging around to watch me help
position and latch babies, and one yesterday had to step out and later said
"I really wanted to stay and watch what you did w/ that baby."
One small step for womankind!
