An IBCLC friend of mine and I have been discussing "brown fat" since we
heard the term at the CAPPA conference in April. We had never heard the
term and would like to learn more about it. We've both searched in every
breastfeeding text book and reference we have on hand and can't find even
a mention of brown fat. Does anyone have a good reference about how brown
fat helps breastfeeding babies?

Someone mentioned that brown fat keeps babies from losing excess weight,
and we're trying to learn more about that. We know that brown fat helps
babies maintain their body temperature, but is that the sole benefit?
Babies aren't using calories to keep the body warm so those calories are
not expended and causing weight loss?

Thanks!

Cee
