Hi all
I am the daughter of a volunteer breastfeeding counsellor (I was the
bottlefed first who showed my mother that there must be a better way!) so my
mother had lots of tips to share when my first was tiny.  She only had to
hear me offering Jack a nipple once to warn me that I might not like to hear
him demand his nipple at the age of two or three.  Hence we had 'mummy
milk'.  I remember that my brother had 'dinka doze' (drink of those) and my
youngest daughter simply had 'side'.  She was the only one of my children to
feed from both sides and so when she finished the first side, pull off and
look meaningfully at me I would asker her, 'Other side?'. My friend's two
year old asks for 'feed'.
None of these was a code word - they were just our words - a way to create
meaning between us.  When they got older and feeding in public was a hassle
(people have strong opinions about seeing a mother feeding a child who is
wearing shoes and talking in full sentences - I could only keep taking them
out barefoot for just so long!) we had a rule about only feeding at home.  I
rarely spent time with people who didn't know or would disapprove of our
continued feeding relationship so I didn't feel the need to disguise it.
