Kathleen,

I didn't mean to say that I don't advocate the use of universal precations,
but I feel that many people rely on them too much and can get careless, i.e.
sleeves inadvertantly dragging through blood, blood on glove and touching
phones, door knobs, sink handles etc. One of our old docs still uses
sterile drapes (as if that area could be sterile). The drapes often
touch blood, feces, etc when mom squirms and shakes ( we do a lot of
natural childbirth at our facility) but he relys on them as a steril
field not to mention the drape pack costs the patient $80 (thats another
soapbox altogether). If a person were to get blood on their hands
they would wash them vigorously immediately, but if on a glove they
still wear the same gloves until they are done with that patient even
though they may or may not know that their gloves are contaminated and
they have touched several things in the room with them. I hope
you understand my veiw.

Thanks
Becky B.
