Exactly. We live so long now......to live this longer life
healthfully, we need better health early on: optimal amounts of
vitamin D, more antioxidants

<<You are totally right in questioning the sources of information (who paid

2nd. But at the end of the day, if the data is good then it stands on
it's own even if we don't like who funded it. It's critical to look
at methodology *critically*, then assess conclusions based on that and
the larger body of literature available to us.

Quickly (my time isn't getting more abundant....cousin is having major
problems with baby and supply, more later) but I've been following
Cannell since the beginning of the Vitmamin D Council, when he was
trying to fund it himself, then when he was trying to fund it through
private donations, then through foundation grants. Everything costs
money though and none of the above were getting the job done so he
finally conceeded to endorsements and similar financial relationships.
His practices are totally transparent. Fwiw, he thinks people should
get D from sun, not from supplements. He'll never be wealthy, or even
well-off, from the donations that come from the relationships on the
site. But it does give an injection of much needed cash so he can
continue getting out this critical information.

His website is a clearing house of information regarding vitamin D.
All of the current evidence is availlable there....including evidence
that isn't available in pubmed b/c he culled it from old hard copy
journals that aren't electronic.....some of which he paid to have
translated into English from Russian and (iirc) German.

My last thoughts. This group is full - *full* - of seriously
intelligent, savvy researchers. Even those of us who aren't
researchers, *are* researchers. There is a *huge* and growing body of
evidence pointing us in an obvious direction with regards to vitamin d
status and hypovitaminosis d risks. It's not small. It doesn't leave
one wondering. A very very clear picture is painted. While we can
debate all day the hows, whys, perceived impossibilites, frustrations,
irritations, disbelief and shock of current vitamin d levels, it's
possible that time is likely better spent delving into the scientific
literature on the subject. You will not be left wondering.

Has everyone read the classic _Who Moved My Cheese?_

The cheese has moved. It's time to act.

All the best,
Katherine

PS To the poster who's daughter is in Canada and has vitamin D levels
that are 'fine': until recently, there were significant problems
with accuracy of vitamin D tests and one of the major labs (quest or
labcorp) had a major methodology issue. Also important to note:
going by what is considered 'normal' may not be enough depending on
what norms are being used by that lab. In the US, labcorp and quest
have updated (last year I think) to a new low of 32 ng/mL....though
by the looks of the literature, that low will go up again w/in 5
years. Have Canadian labs updated norms based on current D
evidence?

After my grandmother doc told her that her 25(OH)D was 'fine' (at 20.5
ng/mL....old norms.....absolutely not fine), I realized that that
taking 'fine' or 'good' at face value is not always a fine or good
idea.
