The reason for weaning is that the breasts must be involuted before thyroid ablation involving RAI which concentrates in milk-making tissues. If mom is still lactating, much of the radiation would be taken up by breast tissue and would decrease the amount that goes to thyroid tissue while increasing mom's risk of breast cancer.

Weaning is also indicated by the fact that her milk would be unsafe for consumption for 3-6 months after ablation therapy.
