Dear friends,

I found an extremily good article on the effect of breastfeeding in decreasing mortality in the world. According to the authors, the "simple" measure of increasing optimal breastfeeding behaviours (defined in this study as exclusive breastfeeding for 6 months, with continued breastfeeding for at least one year) could prevent 13% of world deaths (i.e. it could save 1.3 million children annually).

It also explores the immunological properties of breastrmilk in order to explain why this single measure would have such an amazing impact. It summarizes world efforts to promote and protect breastfeeding (the Code, the Innocenti Declaration, etc.) and it analyses the possible causes of decrease in global momentum for breastfeeding promotion, namely:

  1. Social and commercial pressures, like return to work or industry pressures.
2. Message burnout. Conflicting messages from industry and health departments. Messages are also old and people get used to seeing them (e.g. The Code is 25 years old).
3. Competing issues, like HIV transmission through breastmilk, or alternative treatments for diseases which breastmilk protects againts (e.g. antibiotics for diarrhoea).

  The article is this one:

Labbok MH, Clark D, Goldman AS, 2004. "Breatsfeeding: maintaining an irreplaceable immunological resource". Nature Reviews Immunology. 4: 565-572.
Also reprinted in Breastfeeding Review, Nov 2005, 13(3): 15-22.

I hope you fing it interesting,
