I read the blog post, and I must very respectfully disagree.

The point is made that "sleep training is *not* meant for use in situations
where the problem is actually that the baby still needs night feedings, or
isn’t well, or has had a nightmare, or some other need for help or
comfort." How do *we* make the decision that baby no longer needs night
feedings? How do we know whether the baby had a nightmare or is coming
down with something or needs help or comfort? I can't tell you how often I
have dealt with moms who "just can't understand" why baby won't settle, and
so they leave them wailing. And then they find out the next day that the
baby was coming down with a nasty cold or cutting tooth.

I have no trouble with mothers being boring at night, and personally I
became utterly stultifying when night-weaning toddlers. But that is very
different from isolating a baby, who may or may not understand that mom
didn't disappear completely.

Some of this may be connected to the way we build our houses. When Ma
Ingalls laid Baby Carrie down to bed and went on with her work, Carrie
could hear her and see her. These days we seem to expect our babies to
fall asleep alone in dark rooms, often down a hallway and completely cut
off from the sights and sounds of family.
