Mom of premie twins, born at 30 wks and now 32 wks, who since being on oral
feeds have been primarily on formula reported yesterday that one twin had
blood in stool and diagnosis was anal fissure (NEC ruled out). I have been
trying unsuccessfully, to encourage banked milk for these babies but mom
afraid to use (despite education on same, referral to milk bank web, etc).

Mom stated she was told by NICU staff (unsure if neo told her this) that
when she mentioned formula as possible cause of blood in stool she was told
that "formula allergies don't usually occur in premies."

I don't see how this can be true but wanted to check with those with more
premie experience.

This mom has complex breast problems (no development one breast, reduction in
developed breast, augmentation in other) but is still routinely pumping and
wants to try SNS when able to breastfeed. I am providing info and support
and give her lots of credit for persevering but wish I could convince her
banked milk is best in this situation at least until babies a bit older. She
is an HCP and knows but doesn't know. Main question is re the ABM and blood
in stool. Thanks.
