US Secretary of Health and Human Services, Tommy Thompson is traveling
around the US holding a series of Town Hall meetings to gather input on
public health issues. He visited Austin today for a forum on preventative
health. Many local breastfeeding advocates were among the audience, and I
thought Lactnetters would enjoy hearing that Dr. Susan Landers, a local
neonatologist who is also medical director of the Austin milk bank was able
to make a comment about breastfeeding during the open microphone segment of
the program. Director Thompson spoke positively about breastfeeding in
response, however it is disheartening to then get a copy of the document
"Healthier US: The President's Health and Fitness Initiative" and find not
one word in it about infant feeding practices and the contribution of
formula feeding to obesity and a host of other preventable diseases. I wish
that the US Breastfeeding Committee, the ABM, and other of our advocacy
groups could ever get a chance to insert wording about breastfeeding into
documents such as this.
