"séno" comes from "sein", which means breast in french;
then you get "sénologue" the person , "logue" in french means the
specialist;
and "sénologie" the science of the breast ; as in english: logie in
french is like logy in english, it is the science.

and "sein" would come from the latin "sinus", curve/curvature. In fact,
a fold of the toga crooked on the chest.... a few centuries ago;

The word "sénologie" which is the science of breast, was a word invented
by Dr Charles Gros, and he proposed this word in his book "Diseases of
the Breast" ("Les maladies du sein", 1963).
He was from town Montpellier but lived then in Strasbourg (maths,
physician, radiologist, cancer specialist) ;
He worked from 1950 and during more than 30 years, at getting
"sénologie" recognized as a special discipline which improves all means
to better know and better cure the breast (in all breast's
acceptations), he did not want "sénologie" to become just a brand new
small specialization).
By 1960, he created in Strasbourg the first ward in the world totally
dedicated to diagnostic and treatment of breast diseases. In the same
department were physicians, technicians, searchers. Then were gathered
all the methods dedicated to analyze and cure breasts: rays, ultrasound,
cytology, electronic microscops, scintigraphy, radiotherapy,

Parallel with this medical activity, and after researches of other
pionneers of mammary xrays (Leborgne, Uruguay; Gershon Cohen, USA) he
develops the "sénographe" (would it be a breast-o-graph?) in 1960 with
the general company of radiology, a disposal with whic xrays of breast
are performed today (the book was published in 1987). Moreover after
Baclesse, Charles Gros improves and adapts radiotherapy in breast
cancers, then allowing conservative surgery to develop.
He created the first certificate of university attributing the title of
"sénologue" to physicians. He created the international society of senology.

Please note: except ethymology: all above is a short summary of the
book's introduction (title "Le sein dévoilé").
This book: I like it really; Charles Gros's son evokes the breast under
all circumstances: nurturing, esthetic, erotic, social etc.....

Hope it helps,
Friendly,

Françoise Coudray, IBCLC
