I have seen orange milk in the first month of lactation (some has looked like
concentrate orange juice) Some decernable causes were large intake of carrot
juice, yellow squash, other sources of high carotene, orange gatoraide &
artificially colored drinks.
For many women this orange color represents only a high level of beta
carotene as it does in the colostral phase. Mom may be concerned that her
milk doesn't look like the rich creamy @#%$ in bottles. She should be told
that her milk is very rich because her baby is very young and that some of
the yellow-orange will gradually fade as her baby ages. Is her baby gaining
in leaps and bounds?
I was surprized to hear that some of you have seen orange milk from B
vitamins. In my experience we get calls about green tinted milk from moms who
use B complex vits. Years ago, when I first saw this phenomeon Dr. Wade
gently reminded me of the basic primer on primary colors I learned in
kindergarten: *Breastmilk has a blue tint, B vitamins have a yellow tint. And
what do yellow and blue make, Marie?* Green.
