I do understand that for many years WIC was known as the "free formula give
away program" but that is not true everywhere. In Indiana we have at least 60
IBCLCs working for the WIC program. How many are in your state that work for
WIC? WIC is a nutrition program whose goal is to promote optimum nutrition.
Breastmilk is the optimum nutrition. Our goal to provide the best lactation
support, with a very limited breastfeeding budget, to every mother. Our
dieticians take and pay for the IBLCE exam with their own funds. That is an example
of how dedicated they are to providing the best support to our mothers.

Our state WIC program has provided a six day lactation management course
every year to provide current consistent education to our lactation
professionals. In addition they provide 4 hour in services to hospitals on lactation and
how WIC supports breastfeeding to as many hospitals as possible in the state
each year.
Reputations, such as the formula give away program, take many years to
change as this is a perception. WIC has made great strides to change its image to
the community lactation resource.

Please, everyone, take a moment to look at the current WIC program. Not your
perception of the WIC program.
