Heidi, there could be a true inability to suck on your friend's baby's part;
and I'm sure there will be some enlightening posts on that phenomenon;
however, the fact that she was using Prep/BW, raises red flags that other
factors very well could have come into play.

Most significantly is that many of these parents let the baby cry until they
are exhausted, then when put to breast, they are unable to suckle
effectively.  You didn't mention whether your friend used a pacifier.  This
has the same effect--exhausting the infant.  I personally observed GFI
parents using three different pacifiers during a church service, one right
after the other, in order to hold off their three week old infant.  They
also used their fingers.  It was horrible.

There is also the very real possibility that the baby shut down--many of the
infants subjected to Prep/BW demonstrate depressed behaviors.
