Sorry, I'm not ready to leave this topic just yet.

If an IBCLC feels it is ethically better to not recertify and to
continue to work in the area independently, then that means it's OK
for everyone to do this. Everyone ... that includes the people who
sat the exam but whose knowledge wasn't sufficient for them to pass;
the mother who breastfed her own babies, read a couple of books, and
thinks she knows it all; the person who completes a 3-day course; and
those who do nothing but think it just can't be that hard. No
qualification means they can do as they choose - this sentiment has
been expressed to me by someone intending to do just that since my
original posting - now that's scary!

The public has no way of defining who has at least a defined standard
of knowledge and is answerable to a registration body, and who isn't.
This strongly challenges my ethics!

BTW prospective IBCLCs ARE having second thoughts as a result of the
negativity being expressed on Lactnet. Constructive comment will get
better results than destructive comment every time.

Any yes, I do agree that communication is a really, really important
aspect of every organisation. I'm sure good communication would have
averted much of the uncertainty and antipathy felt.

Denise
