Dear Lacnet: The CDC in their Morbidity and Mortality
Weekly Report, October 4, 2002, Volum 51, Number 39,
discusses the "possible transmission of the WNV" from
an infected mother (via blood transfusion exposture to
the WNV) to her breastfeeding newborn. Please take a
look at this report. Their findings "should be
interpreted with caution." Their current
recommendations "the risk of WNV transmission through
breastfeeding is unknown, these findings do not
suggest a change in breastfeeding recommendations.
(Special thanks to N. Heyns RN, IBCLC, of the Chippewa
County Health Department for sharing this document.)
